The Princess REEN I'm a princess. I've been blogging on this blog since 2004. I love cute things, pink, dresses, fairytales and tiaras. Shopping is my thing, make-up isn't. Being nineteen isn't easy, especially when you have to worry about grades, life and growing up. I'm currently a Mass Comm student in poly and hoping to become someone important in the media industry. Music is something else I'm into. You'll find me singing most of the time. What else? Oh, I found my prince (: |

Da bao-ed from Worldskills Singapore
Tuesday, January 25, 2011 Definition of da bao: A hokkien (i think, at least it sounds hokkien!) term for takeaway. Commonly used in Singapore to notify hawkers/food vendors to arrange for takeaway for your food. Today is officially the last day of Worldskills Singapore. Closing ceremony is held today but unfortunately, I can't make it. But the Worldskills experience has been wonderful. I can sum it up in four words: An unexpected learning journey. I started this journey alone and ended up with a new group of friends. I didn't have any hope at first. I even planned to head off to the different events alone because I didn't know the rest. And I wasn't very sociable. (i think.) When I was selected to participate in this event, I had second thoughts. Since young, I'm always afraid to be alone. You will only see me at events if my friends were there. I didn't like the idea of being alone, especially in an unfamiliar place. So when this opportunity came, I was afraid to take it. But then I thought, this could be the only chance. I just went for it. When the day finally arrives, I was excited and scared. I didn't know if the other bloggers will like me or if I have the worst blogging skills in the group. I never stayed with strangers before and I wondered if my roommate was nice. Thoughts like: "What if she hates me? What if she's annoying? What if she invade my privacy? What if she's mean?" (omg, I'm such a worrywart.) Once I reached the hotel (which is prettttty!), I realised all my worries were for nothing. The room was comfortable, the bloggers were all really nice (and funny.) and my roommate was so friendly. I had a great time hanging out with the group, sharing our thoughts on the competitions and pretty much just enjoyed myself. I will never forget all the late nights we stayed up together - movie nights, shopping at shop n save, instant noodles supper and card games. It's amazing how you can bond with people in three days. I've also gained many valuable insights from the competitions and this event. Worldskills actually opened my eyes to many different skills and talented youths. There are things that I will never imagine myself doing it, like electronics. It looks complicated and it seems like you have to be at the top of your game or really smart to do it. I have a new-found respect for all the Singaporean youths. I think skills are something that you will gain if you put your heart and soul in practicing it. If you truly believe and love what you do, you will excel. Everyone has their own set of skills. A big applause to ALL the competitors and people who helped at the event. You know, sometimes you just have to take a chance in life, even if it makes you feel a little bit uncomfortable. It's time to step out of that comfort zone. At least for awhile. Like what I always believe in, "you never try, you never know." |
